Eighty-nine cyclists, including a handful of actual Texans not from El Paso,
lined up for the challenging Cloudcroft Road Race on Sunday, June 23. They
were greeted by perfect weather. The A & B racers were also greeted by the
same 8 cattle guards and a little mud and debris that washed onto NM Hwy 130
during a Saturday shower. Plenty of climbing for all divisions of this
race. The A race covered about 80 miles and climbed over 7,000 feet.
Sunday's event in Cloudcroft marked the beginning of a three week period on
the New Mexico race calendar that, depending on your POV, is either blessed
by or plagued with abundant climbing: Cloudcroft, Tres Piedras to Tierra
Amarilla (or is it Tierra Amarilla to Tres Piedras?) and the Tour of Los
Alamos.

Aside from the winners' excellent rides, there were several other noteworthy
performances. The Zia Velo Dan and Ryan show displayed its usual teamwork
and heady riding to win both the race and the chase group sprint in the A
category. The juggernaut Chick's Harley team placed 1,3, 4 & 6 in the B
race, with Randy Bradford hanging on to 3rd after a 60 mile break away
effort that was aided initially by Zia Velo's Bob DesEnfants. In the A
race, Jamie Ryan-White (KHSnm.com) hung on to 7th after an equally lengthy
effort, aided initially by Zia Velo's Jaime Gandara, Jr. KHSnm.com juniors
Taylor Lane and Mike Neal displayed toughness beyond their years by placing
second in the B and C races. Zia Velo's Dr. Chris Cooper is no junior, but
he out-climbed a few to finish 2nd in the D race. Anita Doornbos (Zia Velo)
beat several strong men on a very hard course to claim the day's fastest
woman title. Finally, the results sheet make it look like 14 year old Jack
Metzger (Hanseatic/Ochsner) merely finished first out of one in the F race.
In fact, he chose to ride the entire Sunspot course, started with D's and
E's, and finished third overall...and he might be better at swimming than he
is at cycling!

Cloudcroft's new tourism slogan: "Cloudcroft! A great place to visit when
it isn't on fire." Thanks to everyone who traveled to our lovely mountains
to test themselves against these challenging courses. The racing season can
seem long and sometimes repetitive, but you keep the scene alive by
continuing to turn out rather than burn out. Thanks to all of my local
volunteers. Thanks to officials Jim, Bill, Nan & Amy. Thanks to
official/EMT Tomas Diego. Thanks to the Metzgers and Osburns for driving,
to Paula Higgens for helping at registration, to Dan Doornbos for helping at
pre-registration, to Amy Lane, again, for helping everywhere, to John
Parker's mom for corner marshaling, and to Jaime Gandara, Sr, for loaning us
his van. Thanks to the absent Cliff Loucks for advice and logistical
support, and Extra Big Thanks to Mike Slattery and Tim Schoeny, Belgianesque
Strong Men and Nicest Guys on the Planet, for transporting the race kit to
and fro and for helping me set up signs at 6AM.
