We had a decent turnout for the first ever NM High School/Middle School MTB
championships.  I know Stephen had hoped for more, but it still wasn't bad
for the first time, particularly in the HS Boys 17-18 Category, where 22
boys lined up at the start.

After applying some generous eligibility rules, the HS Boys 17-18 field
featured three high schools competing for team awards, with at least five
riders on each team.  Of course the uptight New Mexico Activities
Association wouldn't have approved, but they had nothing to do with this
race, so Las Cruces High School picked up a Las Cruces Mayfield racer and a
Cloudcroft Middle School racer in order to fill out their team, and Manzano
HS picked up an East Mtn HS racer.  The Rio Rancho Rams fielded the largest
team in the race, with eleven boys.  It could have been bigger, but it was
still one of the largest  all-junior bike races these boys have ever
attended.
